Helping Local Governments Protect Vulnerable Children
February, 5, 2008, Durrės The Transnational Action against Child Trafficking (TACT) project held a ceremony in Durrės to acknowledge the start of the new child protection unit in this municipality through a collaboration agreement between Terre des hommes and Municipality of Durrės. The Mayor of Durres, Mr.Vangjush Dako, Director of Economic Aid and Social Care, Meme Xahferri , and representatives from donors of the TACT III project, USAID, UNICEF, Oak Foundation, Norwegian Embassy, Hellenic Aid, and Austrian Development Cooperation, and other partners of TACT project participated in this event.
Child Protection Units (CPU) will be a permanent structure in the municipalities where TACT III is working, i.e. Korēa, Pogradec, Elbasan, Fier, Gjirokastra and now in Durrės. CPUs will analyze and monitor the economic and social situations of vulnerable children and families; provide protection services; and lead coordination activities with local and regional actors. Through the above CPUs, a network of multi-disciplinary actors providing social services at the municipal level will function to improve Child Right Protection Systems.

TACT III project is a joint effort of, Terre des hommes (Tdh - Lausanne), Arsis (Greece), funded by USAID, Austrian Development, Hellenic Aid, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNICEF and OAK Foundation and it works in partnership with the Albanian Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, and the Ministry of Education. TACT III aims at increasing the role of Albanians to establish and maintain child protection mechanisms which sustain national and community child protection nets, necessary to avoid a resurgence of large -scale child trafficking.
