USAID, MJAFT! Partner on New Court Monitoring Project
Tirane, October 14, 2008 Today Mjaft! Movement launched its new court monitoring project supported by United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The project aims to raise public awareness and put positive pressure on courts to be more accountable to the citizens and enforce the rule of law. USAID General Development Officer, Mr. Sean Huff, delivered remarks at the event.
In his remarks, Huff emphasized the importance of civic action to monitor government reforms and the role of citizens to watch, discuss, monitor, and denounce corruption in the judicial sector.
According to Ms. Antuen Skėnderi and Mr. Elton Kacidhja, both Mjaft! representatives, the organization will primarily focus on monitoring and then publicizing cases of judicial corruption regarding the declarations of asset of judges and conflicts of interest. The effort will focus on the District Courts of Shkodra and Vlora, and the Appellate Court of Tirana.
This project is part of Mjaft!’s “I Vote” campaign already underway that will monitors various levels of government powers, including the legislative (Parliament), executive (Ministries), and, now judicial, branches (Courts), as well as municipal councils of Albanian cities.
